Introduction to England.
With a population
of around sixty million, England is one of the four nations which,
with Scotland , Wales and Northern Ireland make up the United Kingdom
packed together on 244,820 square kilometres of land to the north
west of mainland Europe .
There are a
range of different landscapes and climates from the far north to
our south coast; we have remote mountains, rolling, gentle hills,
sandy beaches, rocky coastline, villages, large cities, industrial
areas, farmland, forest and villages.
Our country
has a rich history, with famous writers (like William Shakespeare
and Charles Dickens), inventors,(an Englishman invented the jet
engine for example), scientists, explorers (Francis Drake and Captain
Scott), artists like John Constable and Turner, musicians and composers
(ranging from Edward Elgar to Eric Clapton) as well as actors, sportsmen
and women (David Beckham, Ellen McArthur and Kelly Holmes are great
examples here).
The river Thames
flows through London , our capital city which is a very popular
tourist destination. It has many famous buildings, parks and landmarks,
including Buckingham Palace (home of our Royal Family) and the Houses
of Parliament.
